Anyone ever rebuild a Vette rack and pinion?

I'm thinkin of shortening a C4 rack and would like to know if anyone has ever had one apart. I know that at one time some of the dealers used to rebuild them. And if I can still get it, I think a buddy has a dealer service tool kit that I can use. I have a source for rebuild parts, or atleast the last time I checked. Is there any hints or tricks that anyone could offer as to what to look for once it is opened up. Any one part that goes bad often?
Any GM techs happen to know where I can get a service manual for them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
