Starting up a future business for semi retirement. Need a good logo.. and thus far my DIY attempts and attempts using online consultants has produced me junk.
Thanks for the shout out John. I do design logos, did it professionally for a few years when I started my design career, and my pricing through SRD is pretty competitive. One nice thing about having a motorhead/ design guy do it is we "get it", we understand the industry and how to appeal to your target market. Unfortunately there's an apparent lack of car guys doing design work so I've seen a lot of not so great logos and marketing in the automotive industry. Remember that ad in the back of magazines that showed a 1st gen Pro Touring style Camaro drawing that had 8 lug truck wheels drawn on it? Lol!!
In my experience I've seen the market flooded with mediocre graphic designers. Not that they don't have talent or that they can't use the computer programs, I think the issue is that they're not taught well enough in school about the principles of good design unless they go to a high end design school. The really good new designers get picked up by decent design firms and the rest take whatever they can get to earn a paycheck. Quite often when you use an online logo service they outsource to several different freelance artist hubs where several artists submit a bid on a project and the artist the initial group picks has at it with your gig. Those freelance groups are often college students or folks that are maybe mediocre and don't make enough $ at their day job so they freelance on the side. Of course this isn't all cases but it's a pretty common process. Again unfortunately you get what you get.
I wouldn't claim to be a leading logo expert per say but if you're still working it out with them, post up here what they sent you. I'd be happy to critique or share some insight on what may fine tune it for you. It often helps to put a second set of eyes on things to get feedback you (or they) may not have thought of. Good luck!
