vin number

i just bought a 1972 camaro and i took the vin number off the dash to get info on the car. my question is how long is the vin, on my car it was only 13 but on my 1984 c-10 its 17. i tryed useing the camaro vin online but it tells me its wrong.....

your cowl tag on the firewall will tell you a better disciption of the car but the first set of numbers in your vin will tell you if it was a v8 or 6 banger..if you post the cowl numbers i can look it up for you
