I wouldn't do this for one simlple reason, there should be plenty of room unless something else has been modified. Can you loosen the motor mount and raise the passendger side of your engine to complete the , or will it still hit at "rest" position? If it still hits, how are your motor mounts?
Kenneth, I'd agree that it should fit. All V8 Camaro's came with a mechanical fuel pump and they are designed to fit with either a big or small block.
You should check your motor mounts to see if they are broken/rotted/gone. If they are, the engine would sit alot lower, therefore possibly giving you troubles.
If the motor has been out and things have been modified, you might want to check the engine frame mounts (bolted to the subframe). If they were installed backwards (left on right & right on left), the position of the engine would be off and could possibly give you this problem.
Also, I would not see why making a small 'dent' in the frame would hurt anything, but I would think that if there is a lack of room, it's evident that's it's trying to tell you something is wrong somewhere.
