Default I destroyed a rim on the way back from Goodguys !!!

Well on the way back form Goodguys I hit a rim/tire in the fast lane. The car in front of me swerved just in time and just missed it and I had to make the choice of hit it, or the car next to me.... there was not room enough to get all the way over. I managed to get over enough that it basically destroyed my rim and tire but nothing else....at least thats after my first inspection once I got it home and up on the jackstands...

The guy whose tire came off was across the freeway...... I called AAA and they dispatched CHP.... the guy had a drivers license but no insurance for the vehicle...he was somewhat cool, but I was still pissed.....AAA came and got the car loaded up.... then 2 sherrifs and CHP showed.... I guess the tow compnay called the driver and he didnt answer so they freaked and sent the calavary.....

So the CHP says since the tire/rim was staionary when I hit it, I will be found at fault. Up until that point the other driver was willing to help out with paying for the rim... then it was I'll give you $100..... the CHP also said that I would likley get a point on my record since it was a "staionary object"....

So basically I have the guys info but I'm on the hook for the damages most likely...I can file with my insurance (Grundy), but I dont know how that will effect my rate etc etc...we'll see on Monday....

So..... I need one Bonspeed Delta rim and a Kuhmo tire....hopefully the rest of the suspension checks okay when I do a more detailed inspection tomorrow...

All in all it looks like about $400-600 worth of damage unless I find something tomorrow.... could be a alot worse and my son Kyle was with me, so I thank god the accident wasnt worse.....

Fun fun.....

Damn, Ned...that really sucks and I'm sorry to hear it but at least nobody was hurt. Where was this at? I didn't see anything on my way back.

Anyway, if it makes you feel any better, the rear end in my car has (just today) developed a strange click / clunking sound upon leaving a dead stop in the right rear, so I will not be attending tomorrow either...oh well, life goes on!

That sucks Ned. I can't believe they are going to fault you for hitting a stationary object. The fault should be all on the driver that lost it and since it is known who it was he should be cited.

Hey Steve....its was on 580 just west of Mountain house...around 5 PM or so.....

The thing that pisses me off is that if the rim/tire is stationary, its not his fault that he had it come off........ if it was moving, then its his fault.... its was either hit the rim or probably smack the car next to me....... gee which is better.....

And he didnt have insurance....but the CHP didnt cite him for that.....

Hopefully I can find a hook up to get one rim at a decent price and decent time...... Frank gave me some info that hopefully will help...

Mike... you dont have any hookups for Bonspeed wheels do you ?

Ned

How could you POSSIBLY get a point on your record for hitting debris on the freeway??? That makes no sense.

And the whole "it was stationary" part is non-sensical.. makes it sound like you hit a lightpole..

Gotta love the jackhole with no insurance.. Like I always say, the track is safer than the damn freeways.

Sorry you got nailed.. hope the rest of the car checks out good..

Are you sure Cali is not another country... you have some really stupid laws. Sorry for the mishap and the guy should pay for the damages. He would have been found at fault here in TN.

I agree. I recommend you don't file a claim, don't even call your insurance company. Someday if you make a real claim this will come back to bite you even if you end up not filing the claim.

Don

So heres the damage..

It looks like the center section is okay...its just the outer rim. I looked at the car more last night.... I couldnt wait. Everything looks good....which is making me nervous that I'm missing something.

The wheel is still centered, nothing is binding or appears bent, the balljoints seem fine etc etc. I'm just really suprised I could have done that much damage to the rim without tweaking something else. Since there is no body damage I must have just clipper the rim/tire with the outside edge of my rim. My rim would have been turned to the pass side alot, so I'm thinking the force would have been back and up, towards the outside of the car, rather than pushing in towards the frame etc

As for the point etc....yes I plan on doing more research before I let this all go. I have the guys name, the tow truck driver and CHP names etc etc to. A good friend of mine is a lawyer and he wants to jump all over this to make sure this guys pays for it. If he's all fired up to run with it, I may let him and see how it plays out....worth a shot ot get the rim and tire paid for.

As for insurance....mine is Grundy and its the only car I have on there. I'm gonna call and get some info before I decide about a claim or not. The rim seems to list for around $600....tire $200.....mounting say $40..alignment etc of around $100...so if all else is well, I'm looking at around $1k in damage.... Not "break the bank" but not cheap either.....

Did CHP write you a ticket? If so, what the heck for? That is the only way to get points put on your driving record isn't it? I am not an officer, nor do I know all of the laws, but this sounds absurd ! If you did get written, your lawyer should have no trouble getting a judge to overturn it. I am sorry to hear about the damage, but as you stated, it could have been worse, especially if your boy was with you... The vehicle can be fixed.

Best of luck with this !

Jason
