New here to the Pro-Touring world and absolutely dig the look. I hope you guys will chime in and give me some definitive answers. I am looking for the widest rubber I can fit INSIDE the rear wheel wells of my 71 Z without any pounding, cutting or rolling of the lips.
the car is lowered 2" with an otherwise stock leaf spring set up so the tire is definetely going to sit up in the wheel well. I was informed by more than 1 source that 275/40's on a 9' rim is the safe way to go. I have that tire on an 8" rim on an El Camino and am looking for something more aggressive for the Camaro. I had a 295/35/18 KDW unmounted that I stuffed up in there and it seemed like it would fit. But without having it mounted on a rim I couldn't be sure. Will this tire work on a 9,9.5, or even a 10" rim if it had the right backspacing? Remember I don't want to cut the lip. So, If any of you have this combo, what would be the correct backspacing? Also the front tire comes into play if I can fit the 295/35 in the back. What would be the correct tire to run in the front on an 8'rim? It needs to have the correct sidewall height to compliment the rear tire. Again, wider is better.
I hope I get some good feedback on this. Thanks Don
A 295 usually should have at least a 10" rim but you can check with the manufacturer on that. I have a 295 on a 10.5 rim on a 72 camaro but the front end has been widened (fender flares). The tire is almost 12" wide and I doubt on a stock wheelwell you would do it without reducing your turning. I can take any measurements you want but nothing much is stock any more except the frame for about 3' in that section. Inside to inside tire is about 50" outside to outside is 73 1/2". My tires would be slightly shorter because they are a 295/30 and a different brand, but still close. Hope that helps a bit.
Okay I like you have been doing tons of research on this
If your trying to tuck the tire in the wheel well - this is what I can tell you.
So far I've found out that a 285 -- 26 1/2" tall will fit ( 10" rim )
The 295 will fit but you have to beat the seat belt hump and may want to consider rolling the fender lip ( ps i have a fender roller - both versions now )
But the height of tire has 26 1/2 max
If your goal is to go really low then you have the worry about the fact that the rear quarters are swept or layed over big time on a second gen.
I am trying to figure out I am going to put a 28" tall tire and set that car at a 6" ride height.
One of my options would be what Dan Holohan did on the Sick Fish when he worked at Rad Rides. He actually leaned the rear quarter out and re-did the metal work.

nice look "back in the day" as they say. Nothing like Cragars and T/A's. If you were to lower that stance 2" in the back those tires would become shredded wheat in about 50 feet. Been there....done that! Maybe a 285/35/18 on a 9.5 will have to do
