Funny you should mention this. I have an AGR 12:1 power steering box also and mine seems a bit 'tight' also. I have had a bit of trouble with them actually. The 1st one I had 'slipped internally' somehow while I was lock-to-lock purging it for the first time and it suddenly had some extra slop in it. AGR didn't believe me until I shipped it back to them and then they verified that their brand new unit suddenly had way too much play in it. Then they 'fixed it' and sent it back to me, I installed it, and 50 miles later the input seal blew out while I was driving lazily around my neighborhood and spit power steering fluid all over my $600 ceramic coated headers which stained them nicely. You'd have thought I would have given up on AGR but I got a replacement and this one has worked fine so far but it seems 'tighter' than my first one, like it isn't assisting as much as the first one did. Also, it still seems like it has a slight bit of play in it which you wouldn't think it would have for a brand new unit, but maybe I'm just expecting rack-and-opinion response when I shouldn't be. I have a brand new power steering pump with no leaks and all brand new steering linkage from Moog. Adjusting the nut on the top of the box does 'loosen up' the unit a little bit but then that adds slop which I don't want.
So if you find out why your unit isn't assisting as much as you think it shoud, let me know. I may have the same issue.
And my next power steering box will be a Lee.
