Default what power steering pumps work best on hydroboost equipped car?

my stock gm styled pump with plastic res is shot and it groaned before the hydrooboost now its worse. i even see metal particular in my fluid which isnt a good sign and clear the pump is shot.i want to install the best possible pump to run my rack and pinion and the demands of the hydrooboost. i was looking intoto those KRC pumps with aluminum reservoir. any suggestions on what pumps i should be looking at and what flow rates? i want to upgrade right and not do trial and error on seeing what works. i plan to do a TCP power rack once i do the pump and sort this first issue out.

I used Lee to rebuild an explorer pump I used in my hydroboost conversion of my early Bronco. They also made me a custom Al reservoir. They build custom steering gear for every type of racing so I'm sure they can set you up either rebuilding your existing pump to a proper spec or with a new pump.

I have been using DSE small PS pump with Vintage Air pulley setup with my hydroboost for years now without issues.

Flow rates should be in the area of 2.2-2.6 GPM, with max relief pressure settings in the area of 1400-1600 PSI. We have always had excellent success with the www.krcpower.com pumps, the www.pscmotorsports.com filtered remote reservoirs, along with the Royal Purple Max Ez synthetic PS fluid.

The DSE pumps are great, though recommend you also obtain the lower flow output fitting if going this route:

No matter what pump you end up choosing, be sure to filter the system out thoroughly:

Put the filter in the low pressure return line coming out of the steering gear (not the low pressure line coming out of the hydroboost unit).

I have the KRC pump + large baffled external tank running my lee power steering box and hydroboost. The combination is awesome. worlds better than the OEM style pump on had on there before.

thanks for all the feedback, i have been leaning towards these KRC pumps.

So you guys suggest the KRC pump only with an external fluid reservoir from PSC? What do you guys think of the bolt on Aluminum Reservoirs that KRC makes to attach to their pumps? KRC did tell me they didnt recommend them for a Hydrobost or to add an extra return fitting

my install issue is that i do not have alot of options to mount a remote PS reservoir in my engine bay. if possible i would like to mount it right next to the pump with a custom bracket or something. this is why i was looking for an all in one unit with an attached tank.

now in regards to fluid KRC and PSC have told me not to run Synthetic Redline or Royal and to use GM Power Steering fluid as it is the best.

Default You have many options somewhat coming down to personal preference...

Whether it be GM synthetic, Redline, or Royal Purple is matter of seemingly personal choice. Either will give you stellar results. The reason why we like the PSC Motorsports reservoir so much is because of the generous capacity and the serviceable built in filter. The filter does a phenomenal job of straining aeration and turbulence out of the PS fluid. The built on plastic / aluminum tank late model PS pumps also do a good job. If you stick with the general guidelines discussed, you will be golden.

Correct me if i'm wrong - isn't this a Mustang application?

I want to order the KRC pump however the PSC reservoir for the hydroboost is out of stock for a few weeks maybe. What else is new these days with obtaining parts.

i think this set up will be ideal and i really like the fact of the filter in the reservoir and how it looks. I just had a friend who is a machinist stop over and he will make me a bracket for the res to mount near the pump.

the shop that does all my work just turned me on to this Borgeson Hydroboost Pump they found while searching. It’s a Saginaw type unit.

Anyone here ever use it or know if this pump really will work right with a rack and pinion and the hydratech unit? I think the GPM is a bit much but you can reduce the PSI with a shim kit,

Exclamation Hydraulic pressure and volume is like discussing torque and horsepower...

Reducing max pressure relief with a shim kit does not reduce the pump flow. Excessive pump flow produces excessive heat - just like putting a high volume / high pressure oil pump unnecessarily into an engine and dealing with superheated foaming oil. Higher max pressure relief is "good" when in proper spec, while high flow is "bad" when too high, requiring a mandatory large cooler installation just to keep the PS system operating temps reasonable.
