Default 67 Camaro with minitubs - drag wheels w/ slicks?

Ok guys/girls a bunch of buddies are talking about going to the track this upcoming spring and a particular friend (hardcore ford guy) just picked up a stock 09 Shelby and is already talking smack. I had plans to get a set of track wheels with slicks either way. Figured Id start looking now and came across a set of used weld prostars 15x10 w/ 5" backspacing and a M/T 28 x 10.5W slick. I currently have ridetech airbar with shockwaves, a narrowed moser rear with 35 spline axles and wavetrac diff. My current rollers are forgeline DS3 18x12 w/ 5-3/4" backspacing and a bfgoodrich kdw 335/30/18. Fits both inside and outside with about 1/2"-5/8" on each side give or take a bit depending if I'm all the way up or down. I know the KDW has sectional width of 13.5" and a overall diameter of 25.9". Now the slick has a sectional width of 13.1"and a overall diameter of 28.1". Id like to go with as big of wheel and tire if I'm going to do it, but at the same time I'm not looking to BFH anything to get it to fit. Opinions and insight by others who have explored this? Thank you all the help, Steven

Are the 15's even an option with the brakes you're running?

Since the section widths are similar, I would think you could squeeze those tires under the car with some wheel spacers to center them more like your current tires. You may need to increase your ride height in the rear, but that's what drag cars do, right?

Tobin,
Thanks for the reply. I have thought about the brakes and I have a set of 15x8 centerlines that fit the car no issues. I cant see the welds being that much different. I am running wildwood 12.9" in the rear with the internal e-brake setup. I think is should be fine. It sounds like a small spacer may be required to make this work. In the one piece design weld only makes 5 or 6" backspacing on a 15x10... so I have to pick my poison. Easier to add then take away. I think upgraded extended wheel studs are in my future.. With the rear bags also too high its not a good thing. The airbags are best when they are 50-60% inflated. We shall see.. If they don't work I'm getting them at a good enough price I know I can get my money back out of them.

10.5W is a BIG tire. You better triple check your measurements

yep, not to mention with the sidewall bulge too. It can be up to 2" additional width you are going to have to account for.

Figured Id update this. Lets start with a story..

So I drive about an hour to meet up last Friday night. Get there and the wheels and tires look to be as advertised. 15x10 welds with a 28 x 10.5W M/T. They look good, tires have life left. Just to check I ask the guy for a tape measure. He goes and grabs one.. I measure and come up with 4.5" of backspacing when I was told they had 5". I express my concern for the lack of backspacing, we agree on the price and I'm on my way. On the way home I'm thinking there is no way these are going to fit and ill clean them up and sell them at a later date. I figure when I try to bolt them up the inside of the tire will hit the wheel wells and stop them from going on. I get home after the hour drive and decide I will try to see how far off they are. Here are my findings and comparisons..

So they bolt on no rubbing issues that I can see. Plenty of room both fender side and wheel well side. The tires do not look that big under there. I actual think I can go bigger. But for the price these will do for now. The only issue I see is that my existing studs are not long enough. I ordered 3" arp studs and the specific weld lug nuts to run the welds. Now my close ended lugs will not work on my forgelines being that the studs will be so long so I had to order open ended lugs for my forgelines. More to come once I get the arp studs in.
