Default T56 Magnum - American Powertrain Reverse Lockout Module

I'm in the process of buttoning up a T56 Magnum install in my El Camino. I saw an article about the American Powertrain Reverse Lockout Module and I was wondering if it's a must have or will tapping into the brake light wire work just as well?

Has anyone used this lockout module and is it worth $124?

Thanks.

It's not a must have. The reverse lockout on the T56 mag just needs a 12v power source in order to trigger it to unlock. You can use any approach you want to power this.

Mine is wired in line with the brake light circuit and works perfect.

Downshifting from 6th to 5th, touch the brakes, accidently put it into reverse. NO thank you. Cheap easy insurance to install the module. Takes maybe 20min

I think for right now I'm going to hook it up to the brake light switch or maybe just a toggle switch so I can get some test drives in. I'll worry about a permanent solution later.

IMO, There is no reason to spend a $100 or more for a reverse lock out relay. A lot of people wire the lock out to the brakes but the one thing that I do not like about that approach is that the solenoid is activated every single time you press the brake pedal regardless of whether or not you are actually shifting to reverse. I took a different approach, I used a shift knob equipped with a line lock button and wired that to the reverse lock out solenoid. This shift knob button works exceptionally well since your hand is already on the knob when shifting so it is a natural movement to press and hold the button with your thumb when shifting to reverse. Of course this approach assumes you are not already using such a knob for a line lock or nitrous system.

I'm using this Speeddawg knob but you can buy line lock knobs anywhere.

Herb,
Is the LS3 in the El Camino using a GM fuel injection system? If so, why not add this functionality into the harness & let the ECM open the solenoid when it is going slower than 8 mph (I believe is the trigger point). I did that with my GMPP LS3 harness.
