Just for example, say you need a 6" backspace on a stock width rear, and you end up with a 3" lip on a 10" wheels. If you narrow the rear 1 inch PER SIDE, you could reduce the backspace 1" and pick up 1" of outer lip for a 4" lip.
Or, say you mini tub and do not narrow the rear, you need a 8" back space and have a 3" outer lip. But if you narrow the rear 4 inches you can do a 6" backspace and get a deeper 5" outer lip
