Does the shifter just send a signal to the computer? If so, can the computer get the same "confusion" over the gear selection as it can from the throttle position? When you have driven a couple of winters on snow in an automatic transmission car, you learn real quick to put it into neutral when sliding.

This is why shifters and throttles both should have CABLES. Technology and electronics are great but things like steering, shifters and throttles need to be mechanical as a fail safe.
