Making door handle and lock holes from a shaved skin

The previous owner of my Camaro shaved the door handles off. I want to put door handles and locks on my doors. Should I reskin my doors or could i actually drill out the holes to install the handles and locks? Any inputs or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
