Happy Friday all,
Darrin here.... Owned this Camaro since 1984, bought it for $3000 in high school. It's like part of my family, much to my wife's dismay. Originally a 327/Powerglide, built in Van Nuys 10/67, seafrost green was the original color. Drove it all through high school and college. Hit a deer in 1987 and trashed the right fender. Car sat for 10 years until my dad dragged it out of the shed and rebuilt it, dropped in a 350/M20. Finally in 2008 I brought it up to Chicago and started working on it. "Tinkering" as my wife says.... The car is solid and rust free.
It's a mild 350, nothing special. Plans for an LS down the road, but for now it works. I rebuilt the 10-bolt a couple years ago, probably wasn't thinking long-term, but it was a fun project. Put in an Eaton posi, 3.50 gears, new axles, GM discs. Hotchkis drop springs front and rear (as pictured). But then I realized this thing handles like crap and what could I do to make it more fun to drive - a new suspension!
So last year I picked up a Heidt's subrame. Got it all mocked up last summer, and then we started a kitchen remodel and the Camaro project got shelved. And here it sits. I snagged a TKO600, hydraulic clutch, Wilwood m/c, etc etc. Of course the crossmember didn't fit, at least not to my satisfaction so I plan to build my own. I had to cut out the tunnel to make room for the trans, but I'll weld in a panel and once the console goes back in it won't matter. The wheels are 17" A/R T70s which will stay. The old 350 will soldier on for now. I want to keep the interior/exterior look original. I put in Hotchkis 3" leafs to bring the rear down some. No plans to re-do the rear suspension yet, maybe down the road. Taking it one step at a time. I do everything myself as time permits so progress is slow, especially with kids and family...
I swear this car will be on the road next summer.
