Remember that the bars - or ANYTHING you weld - will move as you heat and cool... so use spacers to hold the bars side to side.. and don't forget to clamp!

Many "beginning" welders - self taught especially - fail to understand the importance of clamping... and then can't get why their stuff isn't the same as the pro.

I've seen these grills being made at Dan Finks -- and the entire thing is in a FIXTURE.
