steering rack location quest.

i have a lil clearance issue with my rack and steering joint and vette ls1 oilpan ...
question ...
can i move the rack a little forward instead of being line up straight linked to the steering arms ?i know usually you want all this lined up but will it hurt to move it forward??? if i can move it what the rule of thumb for this ?
