I don't think it's too much of a pain, I just pull the calipers to change pads and they just snap into the abutment pins above the anti-rattle springs. Supposedly guys have done it by just pulling the middle abutment pins in the calipers, but that's more hassle than it's worth IMHO. Steel pins threaded into aluminum castings always make me a little paranoid anyways , especially with heat involved. I just figure the fewer times the pins need to come in and out, the longer the life-expectancy of the caliper body itself.
