Are you at the fuel pump end or the carb end of the fuel line? I may be thinking too late into the 70s but does this truck have a Qjet on it with the filter inside the portion where the fuel line enters the carb? If so, there's a thin plastic washer that seats onto the end of the large fitting and seals against the carb.

This is the fuel pump connecting to the lead pipe to the q-jet.
