I've been checking prices on used dropouts and rebuilt units and talk about a wide range in prices. I found high mile used for $750+, rebuilt from new jersey for $1k, local builders from $1500 to $2500.00! With me doing the R&R.

I'm still looking around, but either way it's going to cost $$ I don't have. Right after christmas, fantastic timing.

I would think for $1200 you can find a damn good builder and parts. Don't let people push you around and ask around from people (alot of transmission guys do work at night). If you where here for $800 I could help you out quick with my buddy. Keep looking and make sure what your getting as in new bands,valve body update,servo if you chose,The Beast! and don't for get torque converter and to flush the lines!!!!!!!!!! Maybe Greg Weld knows someone he could recomm to you if your close to him. Do some research on parts etc maybe get them and have them build it.

I got it handled. Truck gets picked up at 10:00 am and I'll have it back Friday. All new internals, front to back. Hardened steel sungear/shell, new converter, new valve body and a 3 year nation wide warrantee.

as a transmission shop owner, the average on those units run around 1600-1700 nationwide with a 12month warranty. stay away from the night shift at home. trouble is they seem to never have time to do the warranty work if required.

I am paying a little more than what you listed above but I get a 3yr/50k warrantee that's good nation wide at over 2500 dealers. Plus they are doing the install too.
The install labor is around 500.00. To me that's worth it.

Thanks for your advice. And for the numbers. I feel like I'm getting a fair deal at a good shop. They've been in the same location for a very long time, have a good reputation with previous customers (my own family included) and does all of the trans building in house. I'll get my original case rebuilt if it meets specs. I'll be getting top quality parts installed and everything is upgraded over stock.
They are picking up my truck at 10:00 am today and I'll have it back Friday afternoon.

Not all at home transmission shop are bad!!!! My friend has built trnsmission for 22 years and 18 of them where at a dealer. He built tranmssions at night to afford his hobbies and sttood behind his work 100% even if it was say a torque converter he got from his supplier that was bad. He left the dealer and opened his own shop and has customer left and right cause he has and always will stnd behind his work 12 months 12k which ever comes first. He does alot of company trucks and even has other transmission shops calling him for his help etc. So point is not all guys that do work on the side are bad (Fletchers Customer did not start over night and he works a desk job during the day). Oh did I mention my buddies full time job/transmission shop is at his house with 2 lifts and all right tools to build them and he makes over 100k?
