Default Possibly buying LS1..need advice!

I have an opportunity to buy a 99 LS1 with T56. The k-member was removed with everything kept in-tac with pulleys, manifolds, partial exhaust, wiring harness and computer, rack & pinion etc.. T56 has a B&M shifter on it. Motor and trans is out of a camaro that had less than 60K miles. Im waiting to hear the price.

What price would be a great deal and what price would be a fair deal.

thanks,

Jay

I bought exactly the same from a '02 with 41K on it. I paid $4200 for it.

On eBay you will see prices between $4000 and $5000 depending on how many miles they have on them. You can also find some for less than that.

Overall it is a Win-Win situation, the LSx engines has so many advantages over the old generation of engines. First of all you will loose #200 at least of weight and most of it over the front wheels. That helps a lot for handling.

The LSx can with some bolt-on parts easily reach 500 hp with good fueleconomy and driveability.

Good Luck

Jan

thx for the replys. This engine and trans has been sitting for about 3 years. The balancer pulley is rusted some. I know it was stored inside a building though.

Default My advice

Not that you asked...if you plan on running it stock buy the whole package. If you are planning on doing stuff to the motor before it ever gets in the car just build one from the ground up or order a shortblock or longblock from one of the motor places with all the stuff you want (heads, cam, etc) I know that you can get a 402 lsx short block from Scroggins Dickey for about $3995.

You will probably run a different wiring harness, different accesory drive, clutch and flywheel, oil pan, headers....you get the idea.

What are you planning to do?

i'd say ~$5k for a newer lower mileage engine/tranny
~$3k for an older higher mileage

i'd guess 3500-4000 for the combo you listed

if you want to save cash, the 5.3L's are dirt cheap
aluminum block engine/tranny combo w/ very low mlieage can be had for $2-3k
stock they're about 295hp/325torque or something close to that
& can easily be bumped to 350hp w/ headers & computer retune

Payton,

You are correct. I would replace the heads, cam , intake, oil pan, harness and so on. I have a chance to buy, just waiting to hear a price.

The shortblock method would be ideal if not reusing the older parts.
