They are designed to only record the info it was monitoring a few seconds before a crash occurs. You have to remove the box from the car to annalyse the stored info too. It's really not as nefarious as it sounds. I'd worry if they expanded the capabilities of the box and used it as a real time monitor that can be accessed remotely.

But if they are under constant recording / or remotely accessed they will not release that info to the general public.
It should be your option to have one or not.
