Kyle,

There are plenty of guys running vacuum assist with good results, so just because there may be more threads regarding manual or hydro, that doesn't mean vacuum isn't a good option for those who have a little vacuum at idle. What's most important when building your system is that you choose a booster and master cylinder that will provide adequate caliper pressures, so the size and configuration of your booster (efective vacuum area), the bore size of your master cylinder and the level of vacuum your engine provides should all be taken into consideration.

As a baseline, consider that the stock C5/C6 applications are supplied with dual-9" diaphragm boosters, 1" bore master cylinders and have vacuum levels in the high teens (inches Hg). The factory booster on your '71 Nova has approximately 30% less effective area and your master cylinder was either a 1" bore if you had power drum/drum brakes, or 1.125" bore if you had power disc/drum. Vacuum levels will primarily be a function of your camshaft duration and overlap, but can and will vary depending on several factors.

In general, I would suggest that you run a 15/16" to 1" bore MC with at least a single-10.75" booster, dual-8" booster or dual-9" booster and no less than 14 inches Hg vacuum for consistent performance and good driveability.

This guy Tobin knows his stuff. I used a 15/16 bore master cylinder, fwiw, not sure how much vacuum I'm making though...

Something else to keep in mind is the pad compound that you're running, since that will in large part determine the caliper pressures required in order to achieve lockup. What you don't want to do is err on the wrong side of most or all of the factors, so if you run a low CoF pad, then make sure you're not also leaning towards the high side on the MC bore or the low side of the booster size and/or vacuum levels. In the end, it's the sum of these variables that determines the overall driveability, so like most things, there's more than one correct way to skin this cat so long as your goals are met in the end.
