That ain't all you're missing dude.....

They love the Lotus. Just not when you aim the exhaust at the meter. And no the Vette wouldn't make sound.

My two cents, not that anyone asked...

The screwed up thing about Laguna is that while there is a sound limit, you can PAY for a loud day and gain a few more decibels. Apparently the locals care about noise levels, but if you're willing to pay to inconvenience their ears, well that's okay.

All of my experience on track is with bikes, but I have several hundred laps around Laguna on probably a dozen different bikes. The only bike I haven't blown sound on was a KLR650 that I brought for putting around town. The weather plays a big part. I have known people with bone stock 600s to blow the sound meter; it's the airbox noise. But a few times I have gone by on my race bike at full tilt and it wouldn't be a problem.

I'm betting the sound meter is the reason that they set up a slalom section between 5 and 6 for the USCA event. Low RPM is low(er) noise. Kinda ingenious in my opinion.

I think Ron sutton said the sound meter picks up the higher pitched sounds. The nascars are a lower pitch and that little Lotus is high pitched.

At T-Hill the sound meter is about 50 yards up the main straight from T-15 in the little building next to the fence in the pits. I believe what was happening to me in the Lotus was hitting the rev limiter in 3rd and the pop from the limiter spiked the meter. The motor/exhaust is quiet, add the wind noise from the open cockpit, and the motor pulls right through the limiter it's tough to gauge your shift point. A shift light would be handy in that little go kart.
