the black legacy plates are already shipping. If you search on google images you can see some cars with them already.

Is there a shop that repaints these things? I kinda want mine black with red wording. Its mostly a show car so not worried about a ticket.

Maybe I'm seeing things but I swear I saw a new black plate on a newer CTSV a few weeks ago.

The license plate on your car is considered government property. If you paint it or alter it in any way your car can be impounded and the license plate confiscated. Its considered altering the identification of your vehicle. Not worth the effort or trouble for a "look".

I think he just means cleaning up and painting as in restoring to original condition. This happens all the time with the old black and blue plates and while it may technically be illegal -- I don't know -- it certainly isn't common practice for any impounding or confiscation to take place.

He said he wanted them black with red wording. No California license plate comes like that. From the looks of it he has a 68 camaro which would be black and yellow plates. They're, black and yellow, blue and yellow, white and blue. from what he wrote it sounded more like changing the colors.

All vanity plates are submitted to the dmv for approval and must be approved. The "custom" part of vanity plates are just the lettering and numbers being changed, not colors. Colors can't be altered from approved dmv issued plates.

I guess I missed the part about black with red. He PM'ed me about my restored black plates for my '68 (posted earlier) so that's what I was going off of here. My bad.

so I cannot put a black and red vanity plate on at a car show? As long as I use the normal plate when its driving I don't see the big deal.

John, a bunch of guys at GG use "vanity" plats at the show, some people just do not want other people taking pics of their cars with their plates for whatever reason.

There is a guy at GG that is in Oakland and does a superb job on making custom plates, and pretty sure you can pay him to do whatever color on yours (he made some all brushed aluminum ones and all black ones in the past). The guy has a work truck full of plates and normally parks by the swap area, I may have a card. He also restores plates. Note that the plates he sells can not be used for registration since they are aluminum.

You can get year plats black and red already done online, i.e. year plates here for your 68 in red, about $60:

Like the other guys mentioned, the DMV will require the year of manufacture sticker, and plates (they "may" require a month tag separately). The YOM sticker in good shape is about $30 and up, and they are unique numbers. At the DMV they will use a magnet to test your plate, check if it is available, and pretty much that is about it.

Good luck!
Gui
