81 Malibu painted

Got my Malibu painted this weekend. I haven't had time to do it myself so I made a "deal" with a car buddy. He shot it Sat and gave it back on Sunday. I would have done a more time consuming but better job myself as I was going to use an epoxy primer and block it and he just sealed it and shot it. At least its painted now though (been sitting a couple years since I did the bodywork) and I'll have it back on the road. I can fix little stuff later and reshoot spots.

I'm going to color sand and buff it during the week and then another buddy is going to weld the cage permenantly. The cage was fitted and tacked in place then removed to paint since the interior's in the car.

Having other people work on any my cars is new to me (I don't like it) as I usually do all my own stuff. I really need to replace all the stuff that was stolen so I can weld and paint again but furniture, appliances, electronics should come first.

It' a stock metal Turbo Regal/Grand National hood I picked up in the mid 90's. I measured the Malibu hood and measured the hood on a buddys Turbo Buick and decided I could make it work. So I watched the local trader papers (pre internet days for me) till I found a hood. For those reading and thinking it'll be an easy bolt on, it does require some body mods to make it appear like it came on a Malibu.

Would you care to share those mods? I had considerd doing a 70's Chevelle cowl-induction w/a functioning flapper but that's pretty involved. Maybe the GN hood would be an option & I do like their appearance.

The Turbo hood is a little shorter (1/8"-3/16" maybe, I forget) so you end up with too wide a gap at the leading edge of the hood when the rear edge is aligned properly with the rear upper edge of the fenders at the windshield base. To solve that you need to add a little to the front edge of the hood or the rear edge of the front header. Welding a bit along the leading edge of the hood wasn't an option for me at the time but would give a "cleaner" look.

The center section of the Turbo hood is also higher than the center of the Malibu header so you have to add height to the header so they match at the leading edge of the hood. The body lines in the hood and header also will not match up (off maybe 1/2") Since I was already adding to the header and making a new body line I used that opportunity to build back a bit to narrow the gap between the hood and header.

If I remember correctly (was over 10 years ago) I think the rear corners had to be "massaged" to lay flatter so the rear edge of the hood would run across to the upper rear corner of the fender at the windshield base.

The hinges, bumpers, and hood latch match up fine and I drove this car as my daily driver for 11-12 years with the hood before deciding to put some new metal in a couple rusty fender and door areas and paint the car again.
