Default Need some transmission help!

We have a 700 R4 that has been working fine, we are headed down the road over the weekend, all of the sudden it loses all the gears including reverse. Coast over to the shoulder, let it sit a little while then it takes off for a mile or so and does it again. We get it home, sits for a little while and it works but then does same thing again. No previous signs of slippage, no hot rodding really, just all of the sudden quits. We did drop the pan last night and the fluid seems fine but found a couple of peices that look like part of a speedometer gear or something? Any ideas before we take it out?
