Default starter tech

My nice gear reduction starter gave up. It started making grinding noises and would slip sometimes. Then it quit, so I took it apart and found the problem. The housing for the clutch is cracked so I need to replace it. How do I get the snap ring off the end of the shaft so I can get the gear and clutch off?

Thanks Dan

This is the starter.

It has worked great for me. The only reason it broke was my timing light went to hell and I had 55 degrees of locked out timing. There must be a simple way of getting the gear and bendix off the shaft.
