Default Selling a car without a title. The frustrations of Conn. DMV rules.

I am trying to sell of a couple of the older cars I have. My 47 Ford street rod, the other a 55 Chevy. My problem is Connecticut does not title cars 30 years old or more. So what is a guy to do? I have CT. issued bills of sale, signed over registrations as well as a letter from CT. DMV stating they do not issue titles to cars this old.

What are some of you fellow CT. residents doing when selling your car? Am I missing something here?

For you out of staters, what does that mean to you? Would you buy a car from CT. knowing I can't supply a title, but have everything else to prove ownership? I have been told all states know that CT. does not give titles and accepts this as fact, but is that true? If looking to buy a car from me in CT. what would you want from me?

What to do.......

Glenn

It varies state by state, however you don't need broadway title if it's all on the up and up most times. I bought my base car from GA with simply valid registration. PA requires current valid registration from those instances where other states do not issue titles. Other than the seller having to go and register the car for one day, the transaction was seamless.

Taken for the DMV website.

I have purchased an older vehicle in Connecticut, but the seller does not have a title. He says that the vehicle does not require a title. How do I register the vehicle?

The State of Connecticut no longer requires title certificates for vehicles manufactured prior to 1981. In order for you to register the vehicle, you must have a Supplemental Assignment of Ownership (form Q-1) and a copy of the last registration certificate. You must show continuity of ownership from the last registered owner to you.

Basically you need to give the person a Bill of Sale and your old registration form and then they need to fill out the Q-1 form.

When I bought my camaro in RI, they don't issue titles for old cars either. I had a Bill of Sale, I got the Q-1 form and filled it out and I had a copy of the previous registration. I didn't have any problems other than my car failed the safefty inspection at the time. When I moved to MA i check the RMV and i didn't have any issues registering my camaro here either with no title from CT. MA did issue a title to me since they still title every vehicle.
