Firefighter/paramedic here!! Can't beat it with a stick. I work 10 days a month with 24 on shift, 48 hours off. The best part...I have the only job in America that pays me to sleep. With my vacation time and holiday days off, I work about 100 days a year.

Robotic Welding Technologist here. Got into welding thinking it could give me a handy skillset for working on my own stuff, and it evolved into programming robots. Now I don't have the skills OR the time to work on my own stuff.

Default Engineer in title only....

I work for a little aerospace company, Lockheed Martin, at a missile and explosives manufacturing site. We have been know to test the things we make too, WHOO HOOO!! I do a little bit of everything, but mostly I'm the Security and Safety guy.

There are about 4 kinds of employees at that kind of place, managers (who tell you what to do, but not how to do it), hands on workers (the ones who do the hard day-to-day work), administrative folks (people who never leave their desks, but use email, phones and keyboards the whole day), and engineers (the folks that figure out how to make the other three kinds of employees work together, and they aren't engineers, just engineers in title). I fall into the engineer category, figuring out how to do the job right, so that nobody gets hurt or in trouble. It is a full time job, and then some.

The work is always a challenge, very rewarding, every once in a while it is rocket science, and I get to be a part of some really cool stuff when new projects come along. Really keeps the mind sharp and expanding. A lot like figuring out how to put your car together, and keep it running. And doing what it takes to make it better.

I own a video production company. My primary role is post production (editing, graphics, animation), but we all do a little bit of everything. It's a fun job that constantly evolves, but deadlines can get a little crazy.

On a side note, my Camaro project did somewhat inspire me to start my own business...

I was working on the car one day and messed up a replacement panel I had bought (can't remember what)...and man, did I get angry. I was mad at myself for messing it up, mad that I was worried about the cost of it and mad that I would never finish this endless project on my small salary. I clearly remember sitting on the curb, staring at the car and thinking "something has to change."

Of course that wasn't the only reason, but it was definitely a factor in the decision to quit my job and take a chance...thankfully, it has worked out pretty well so that car will always mean a lot to me.
