Default Suggestions for 5.7 Hemi

So what do you guys like for controlling an '09+ 5.7 Hemi? I want one in my current project which is getting a viper t 56. Plans are for the motor to go in relatively stock then maybe a cam or turbo(s) down the road. I would like to keep the VVT and MDS if possible.

I have talked to Hot Wire Auto already since I have their harness and ecm on a truck i built a few years ago. They can make the harness but no dice on the ECM as of yet. Dave at B&G may be able to do the ECM but no reply from him yet. I contacted FAST about their 2.0 which seems good and I can get data logging. I would love flat foot shifting too but I did not see anything on that from FAST. Are there any other options out there I did not know of?

i think that the vvt would be easier than the mds to retain. ive done a couple swaps putting the 09 and newer motor into an 05-08 charger/magnum.

the easiest way to do that is to swap over the reluctor wheel on the crank from the older motor, install a vvt lock, and just use the old pcm. in your case, you could use the mopar/aem computer setup. on the plus side, without the vvt you can run a pretty decent size cam with no piston to valve clearance issues.

as far as keeping the vvt, you need something that can communicate with the vvt solenoid properly, and im not sure what system will do that.

or you could use a 6.1 instead of the 5.7, which does away with the vvt and mds altogether.

I would not mind a 6.1 but they are just too expensive for me. It would be great to get a 6.1 and then later on find an aluminum block to cut 100 pounds off the car. I have a budget to finish up the car and a 6.1 would just about eat all that up. I can get an 09 5.7 locally for $1700 or so. I was just watching a video on FAST's site and it said that the 2.0 can manage VVT. Still no email reply from them but hopefully will hear back soon. I also liked their system since it can easily handle power adders and have 4 different tunes I can control with a switch in the car.

Hot Wire Auto also mentioned that the 09 has a short runner solenoid. Did you run into that? and were you able to maintain it?

The Mopar/AEM ECM just seems stupid expensive....2 grand?? and I do not think I am getting near the stuff I could get with the 15-1800 XFI 2.0

I really do not want to get rid of VVT or MDS tho. This car will never see a trailer on purpose from what I figure. I want to drive it everywhere so obviously MPG will eventually come up so I would like it to be decent. I guess that if I had to choose one, i would prefer VVT

Something else that I am thinking tho is that the MDS works (as Im sure you know) but collapsing 4 of the lifters thus not letting those intake valves open. All the ECM would have to do is know when this happens and then turn off those 4 injectors. It could still fire the coils but the AFR read but the O2 sensors will be the same

i hear ya on the mopar controller being way too expensive. i just figured i'd throw that option into the ring.

i have yet to look at the new fast stuff, but if they say it can do vvt, then that sounds like the way to go.

the mds is controlled by 4 solenoids on the top if the block. when they are energized, they cause 4 cylinders worth of lifters to collapse. at the same time, the pcm shuts off the injectors and coils for those cylinders. as long as you dont go too crazy with the power, the mds lifters will hold up fine. but past 500hp or so, i would start to worry.

also, if you're really worried about gas mileage, i built a 6.1 based 440cid that put down 540whp on pump gas and got 26mpg on the freeway....

I wanted to update this thread with what I am pretty sure i am going to do. Hot Wire Auto can make me a wiring harness and B&G Performance can do the ECM work on a stock computer. That will keep my MDS, VVT and the short runner solenoid with the truck motor i want to run. All that stuff will run about $1600 and have OEM quality. Not knocking the other guys, just sayin

Also I was talking to FAST. Turns out that in the video on their website they said 2.0 can control VVT. That video is 2 years old and I guess there was no real demand for it so they are actually not doing it

So B&G can make a PCM work with a stock harness and PCM into a retro mod is that right? That's interesting(since I have both from my latest purchase)
