Most people run 4 7/8 - 5" BS is the front. I had 17x8 with 4 7/8" BS with a 245/45/17 on my 68 Camaro. I had to run a 5/16" spacer to clear my brakes. This made my effective BS 4 9/16". At 4 9/16" I would get rubbing at 12 o'clock on the inner fender when I hit bumps. This would have been worse with 4 1/2" BS. I ended up swapping wheels to a 18x8.5 with 5 1/4" BS with a 245/40/18. I didn't have any rubbing issues with this combo.

When I had the stock width rear in my 68 I was running a 18x9 with 5 1/2" BS with a 275/35/18. I wouldn't have been able to run 5" BS. If anything I'd have been better off with 5 7/8".

Every car is different so your best bet is to measure for yourself, but that is what worked on my car. I assuming the 68 Camaro's and Firdbird's are similar in fitment.
