I love techin' at stuff like OUSCI.... only because the rules are so basic... and I keep thinking... 'cause I've seen it... that having a fire extinguisher 'on board' is just so friggin useless in 9 out of 10 cases.

Nobody knows where it is - the driver can't get out - unclip it - and he's freaking out about his car on fire... It's like UGH... The friggin' thing is mounted BEHIND the drive so you can't reach in from outside the car and get it and start fighting fire with it...

Ya need this stuff when you've wrecked -- and you're "in shock" -- and all of a sudden a friggin' fire has broken out!

This is one of those "rules" that says -- it's better to have it and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it.

The track stuff Charley and I have been doing - they make us wear proper clothing... gloves... helmets... shoes...

At the speeds we're going - most of the guys have fire suits - driving shoes - fireproof gloves... real helmets etc. ROLL BARS/CAGES.... Just sayin'.

Yep. I have not been required anywhere to have most of this stuff but I am getting it and will be using it because it is the safer and smarter thing to do.

Just because ASCS says you don't need it (or sometimes do say you need it but then don't actually require it when you arrive) doesn't mean it's not a good idea.

Think about these things and make the best informed decision for yourself and your application.

Glad you think that way! Fire don't care where, when or what it burns

Now lets talk "head and neck restraints"

Default Safety

After seeing Dave do a buck forty, I have been pushing the safety factor. We are making it a priority.

After running Sonoma -- and having two MAJOR wrecks in my run group - a HANS device is something I've been thinking about adding. My helmet already has the connectors installed.

At Thunderhill it would be hard to get into a "sudden deceleration" event (hitting a wall)... but Sonoma is concrete walls and some blind corners where you could get into trouble with coolant on track or a spin out etc...

After seeing how much damage was done to the two cars coming off turn 6 @ Sonoma gets you thinking about this kind of stuff.... The brand new Shelby GT500 was smashed front and back.

It may not be a wall... It could be a spun car sitting on the track!! I can think of a 1000 good reasons to wear a head and neck restraint... Give me one valid reason NOT to wear one, You can't can you..... NOW GO GET A HEAD AND NECK RESTRAINT SYSTEM

If it wasn't for the Jerdawg bringing up HANS, very likely I wouldn't have paid any attention to what was on ESPN today on this subject.

It was an extended feature on Dale Jr. and what he is going through health wise due to the concussions. They also had in car video of the forces he encountered/what was going on with his head during the huge pile-up last weekend.

Not pretty.
