Built Not Bought article LOL!

The one thing I find ironic about "Built Not Bought" is that NO ONE is making EVERY single piece for their car. No one is mixing paint colors out of nothing, skinning animals for their hides for their interior, shaping panels from steel sheets, etc etc. Everyone buys something that goes onto their cars. Be proud that you have the skill and time to do what you can to your car and enjoy the hobby with other like minded enthusiasts.

Maybe we should all hate GM, Ford & Mopar for BUILDING all of these cars that we have BOUGHT.

Good point. I was going to mention we’re all just modifying a product produced by a company.

I’ve seen a lot of people out here in Scottsdale who trade cars like baseball cards. They know nothing of the cars history or who did the work. Cashing in on the retro rod pro touring shtick.

Either way these cars have got a lot of attention and have been in the limelight for some time. That has brought out some real interesting characters.

I think the article has merits, I'm having a car put together with my input but i'm not physically turning the wrench every weekend. Does that make me less of a car guy? I don't think so, i took the approach of have a reputable shop that builds suspensions for mustangs put it together.

This get me on the track faster, which i enjoy way more than turning a wrench and i get to spend my weekends with my family (1yr old and another on the way) that are more important to me then some self of entitlement by claiming i built my car with my bare hands.

At the end of the day if you enjoy the vehicle you built / purchased / trade etc and it puts a smile on your face thats what matters.

I plan to keep my car unattractive enough so that no one will remotely assume that anyone other than I (aside from vandals) did anything (worth paying for) to my car . . .

When it breaks, I can blame the driver. This is not a value statement.

I am cheap (Steel Reserve!) and pathologically unable to pay others to do stuff (including basic plumbing in my house). That's partly a value statement, and partly an admission of psychological disfunction--we like to share that kind of thing here.


Tim's essay made some decent points that many on this site undoubtedly struggle with--many are happy to hear their frustrations voiced through the keyboard of another, echoing the way we appreciate (or dislike) another's music (as indicated quite nicely by the original poster ). That's what forums like this, along with effective communication, are for.
