But since I have no experience with a Prius, can anyone tell me if the shifter actually does anything, or is it similar to the fly by wire throttle? Does the shifter just send a signal to the computer? If so, can the computer get the same "confusion" over the gear selection as it can from the throttle position? In which case it would not respond to any signal telling it to switch into neutral .......

When you have driven a couple of winters on snow in an automatic transmission car, you learn real quick to put it into neutral when sliding.

This is why shifters and throttles both should have CABLES. Technology and electronics are great but things like steering, shifters and throttles need to be mechanical as a fail safe.

and I agree, steering,brakes and throttle should be less complicated
I hope you guys dont fly much, modern aircraft use artificial feedback to the control yokes. I find myself rebooting systems more and more to cure grips.
