I've noticed a few fabricators using it also. I asked a friend of mine and he gave the same reasons you quoted, less heat to get flowing and easy to work after. He said your not supposed to use it in any stress/load area though...

Yeah, low heat, thin metal and rust metal friendly, and easy to grind. I use it in these applications and on any overlapped low stress areas.
I started using the silican bronze growing up in my Dad's Commercial/Industrial sheet metal shop. Used it alot in fabricating roof flashing's, rain caps, etc. Except I used a copper jacketed carbon stick, stuck in a electrode holder instead of a Tig torch.
It's also used alot in ductwork applications in nuke plants.

Are you just using standard silicon bronze rod like what you would use with a gas welding set up or is it a certain alloy or size? I too grew up using it for bodywork, but that was still back in the day of gas welding and dipping the rod in flux, etc.
