I can't figure out why Laguna has a sound restriction, I just google mapped both tracks and housing seems to be just as close. Only difference I see is that in Portland people are probably more annoyed with the train track noise and horn blowing than the track.

The big difference is one is in California....everything is regulated to death here...

I think often when they measure DB it is not Equal, since they measure every type of engine on the same RPM.

An 7 liter v8 makes a lot of "noise" on 3500rpm but an 2.5 litre is quiet until 7000plus... On-track measuring could be different though, but they often seem to want to find a way to get you if they dont right away..

It is a bit ironic that you can have a street car that is not allowed as an race car, because of noise..


It seems this is a worldwide problem.

Many years ago, theres was a series here who had this problem, mounting the exhaust upwards in the end helped some, so the exhaust did not "hit" the ground.

Crosses and stuff in the end of exhaust and such helps too, on a street car you could make some that is mountable of some sort. If you are on the edge it can work, go to Radio shack and buy a cheap db tester to test at home?

I have seen some pretty desperate sound "muffle" systems some times, that is made on-site.. He..He..

Laguna Seca is a park owned by Monterey County. It is not your typical track trying to make money. The hillsides around the track have houses and sound travels differently. Thunderhill when the expansion is done is supposed to be the longest track in North America. Can't wait.

Never heard about that. That's cool. I doubt my memory will be good enough to to memorize and get comfortable on something that long. I know Spring Mountain, with the addition of their new track sections, is configurable up to 6.75ish" miles.

Not to worry --- The track will mostly be run as TWO separate tracks -- very few events will get the entire track to run on. NorCal Shelby has a "whole track" event coming up... so that will be a hoot!!!

Things are regulated to death in California but Laguna Seca is the only track that has the ridiculously low db limits. Sonoma Raceway is a fantastic road course to drive on with decent facilities and I believe they did lower their db level down to 103 from 104. Thunderhill is another great place to run and they may have lowered their db levels from 104 to 103 also. Buttonwillow is another great track and perfect for the beginner. At least 15 different configurations, no elevation changes, and run off for days.
