Well I gave it plenty of chances but they just aren't happy with my motor and apparently shifting techniques.

I thought about the Italian gearsets and told Rich about them, but now I am just thinking something newer and beefier altogether... and different.

After 4 various Muncies in this car in less than 2 months, I'd say it's time to try something else!

It's a Monte Carlo bar that was custom fabbed by the shop the previous owner had do all the rollcage work. It ties in those forward down bars that keeps the frame and cage all rigid.

Yes that was a fun chat and gave me -- as resident one-liner Todd would say -- the warm and fuzzies inside.

^ Hey Dave - what's the deal w the italian gear sets? Never heard of them (nothing new there). Also, that was a very cool story of the prior owner. Maybe you and Rich can draft him into the pit crew?

Apparently this is a way to get some stronger gears in there. There was/is an Italian gear company who manufacturers stronger M22 gearsets with a greater level of detail (apparently) than what Muncie themselves did. I couldn't find a ton of solid details on them but did find several 4 speed/Muncie rebuilders/sellers who sell them for about $500-600 a set. But, if I am going to dump $1000+ into ANY tranny, I figure it not be a Muncie.... you can dress up a hooker with Gucci shoes and bag but she is still a hooker.

And my pit crew is getting kinda big then.... puts some more pressure on said driver to perform.

Yep. Just look at it as a $1000 discont on the new tranny...

I don't remember for sure but that sounds right! I didn't go -- only the pit crew went... I was not feeling 100% that weekend so I stayed at the hotel, another Rosamond treat.

Haha, right on! I used to be a Lancaster local, we would venture to rosemond for a good laugh now and then.

Well I dig the car and the videos, if you ever need another pit crew member, I'd love to come drink some beers.

Well after a little hiatus and some time researching and sourcing parts, we are back at it. Took out the trans and clutch yesterday to make way for this new baby:

It's a Tex Racing (now G-Force) T101A 4 speed from a Nascar team. Can routinely pick these up with some race miles on them for about $1800-2200, but I found a gem with mostly fresh/new parts on craiglist for $1750 in the gear ratios I was looking for - very close to the M-21/M-22 ratios.

2.26 1st
1.54 2nd
1.29 3rd
1.1 4th

It's got dog rings so can't wait to do some clutchless shifting and left foot breaking on the road course.

One of the reasons I liked this conversion is that it's nearly the same case size as the Muncies I'd been using, and the only things we think are needed for the swap are a clutch disc change (10 spline to 26), a Turbo 400/1310 yoke, and some tunnel mods to make room for the heim shift rods and bulkier Hurst Super Shifter.

Also cleaned up the dirty exhaust system a bit. A $5 can of Rustoleum goes a long way.

Bad ass, that will be a blast to row through the gears. Now that's a close ratio. Look at 2nd-4th.
