This is a project that I started a few years ago and worked on real hard for a summer. Due to some money issues, I stuck the car in a trailer and it has been collecting dust for a couple of years. The financial issues have gotten much better and I have been on a buying spree over the last month.
I started with a relatively rust free 1965 Mustang coupe, that I paid $400 for and hauled it home. This car had been sitting for a long time, you could have grown pumpkins in the back seat. I stripped the car down and had it sandblasted, and put it on wheels so I could work on it. I started by reinforcing the front and rear sub-frames together and built a drive shaft hoop and reinforced the rear of the car. Next I cut the top off the car and cut all of the sheet metal off the back half. Split the rear wheel wells, added 3 inches and started building the roll cage. After the majority of the cage was built I hung fastback rear quarters and deck lid. At the time I thought I was going to have to hand build a section between the rear window and trunk lid. They now make this piece and it will save me a lot of trouble.
The rear suspension is a three link set up right out of the stock car catalog and the front is a new cross-member with adjustable uppers and custom lowers. Using Koni 30 series shock all the way around. The front of the car is all gone except for the frame rails and roll cage tubing coming through the fire wall. I purchased a complete heavy duty fiberglass front end that will be removable.
I am putting a DOHC 4.6 Cobra motor with a Supercharger in the future backed by a automatic.
I have a long way to go, but I am really excited to be working on it again. I don't know if I will be able to finish it this year, but at least it will be rolling with the full cage and suspension complete and I will have the drive train all mocked up and hopefully running. The paint and body will get finished and in primer by fall.
That's all for now, I will post new pictures as I make additional progress.
