Default Chris Alston Subframe and Front Wheel Size

Are any of you running a Chris Alston g-machine subframe on a 69 Camaro? I am trying to finish up a car with this subframe and I need to know what wheel size would work with it. I had a local shop do measurements and they are saying a 18"x7" wheel is all that will work up front.

Any of you have direct experience with this combo and willing to share your wheel dimensions?

Have you contacted them directly? I'm positive it can take a wider wheel than that. Just found this:

Camaro/Firebird 1969 - 11-11.6” tire section width (275 = 10.8”, *285 = 11.2”,*295 = 11.6”)
Typical sizes include: 275/45-16, 275/40-17, 275/35-18, 275/30-19, and 275/25-20. *285 & 295 series tire
can be used with a carefully selected wheel backspace that centers the tire in the allowable space.

Thank you. I have contacted them directly, and unfortunately all they would tell me is that I would need to take measurements to get exact wheel sizes. In case it helps, here are the measurements I have:
Front Spacing: 3"
Back Spacing: 10.5"

I don't know what those measurements are. For a 275/35 or 40 or similar most guys run a 8" wheel with 5.25" bs. I'm sure you can run a 9 to 9.5" wheel up front.

Those numbers don’t make any sense to me. They imply a 12.5 inch wide wheel.

For stock WMS on a first gen the offset is +6mm regardless of wheel width to center wheel in the wheel tub.

I under stood a 10" wheel with a 305 tire would work, with larger wheels wells of course,

but it could be hearsay!

I have their frame on my 69 Camaro. I have 275/35/18 tires with 9.5 wheel with 15mm offset which equates to about 5.75” offset. The only issue I have is the tire rubs the frame at lock to lock. I put a 1/4” spacer and it still rubbed the frame slightly so I had to put rack and pinion spacers to limit travel. I put 1 spacer on each side now no rubbing.

So with the 1/4” spacer my offset is 5.5” or 10mm. So I think your safe with 5.5”-5.75” of offset. You will definitely need the rack spacers. BTW, I have stock inner fender bolts and the tires do not rub on the bolts.

I realize this is an old post but it’s perfect timing that I came across it.

I have the Alston front frame in my ‘68. As I’m looking into sizing my wheels I notice that their manual states, in bold, not to use positive offset wheels with this suspension. I don’t know if it’s the geometry or spindles or what. But that kinda limits the wheel choices. None of the sizes mentioned earlier would work without positive offset.

Do you guys know why this is? Is there something that can be changed?

Also, I have their sculpted spindles and really don’t like how the dust cap sticks out of the wheel and I can’t use center caps. Are there any other spindles appropriate for this kit that might have a shorter shaft or something? I’ve got Baer’s hubs and the wheels otherwise fit fine and mount flush to the rotor. It’s just ugly and I’ll have to grind out the little lip that the caps would clip to so that I can screw the dust covers on.

That’s why I had to use the 1/4” spacer in the fronts because the hub sticks out and I couldn’t get the center cap to clip in. With the 1/4” spacer everything fits. As far as the offset I’m not sure but I know 67-68 Camaros have less room than 69 Camaros. The offset/backspace I have isn’t a lot from center. Mine is 15mm which is about .6” and I added a 1/4” spacer so now we are talking about .3” from center?
