Default Lateral-g project car rear end.

I have a 12 bolt posi purchase price 650.00 4:11 gears my question is at 650 the gears need to be changed to 3:50 and also c-clip elininators and will get us into the thousand dollar range on it plus brakes, My question is this 3 options We use the 12 bolt or we use the 8.5 10 bolt in the car and put a posi and gears in it, the 8.5 is 28 spline and not really much weaker than the 12 bolt, Or we can buy a ford 9 in housing for A body for 350.00 plus shipping I know of a third member with 3:55 gears and posi 31 spline from a bronco for 150.00 then axles so we will be in it about 800.00 total so the question is 10 Bolt 12 Bolt or Ford 9in

Default axle

I think you need to define your ultimate needs; If you're not making lots of power, the 8.5 is plenty strong for most street apps. If big power is in your future, an investment into a well-built 9" might be called for.

If you're interested- I have a 3.42 12 bolt that I can have made to your width, but I'm asking 800 for the rear (all rebuilt), and an additional 600 for adding ford ends and Moser axles (cut to your width).

ohcbird Thanks for the input and offer, at this time we are just looking for the poll, There is a strict budget and profile for the car, I am looking for the proper poll result in the build as far as money and fitment to the current car, That is only going to make about 400-450 hp and about 530 fpt, and what is cost effective to the build. What happens to the car as far as power is not of intrest at this time to me but what we can do with our budget and what is logical, If there is intrest in the final project and all agree it will take another form, and go on and we will see what can be done else wise, There is a great car of all time that no legacy will ever match to me and that is PROJECT X. We now have a chace to build a car on a simple idea that has never been done and also the input of others and to hopefully show our younger members what can be done and step by step how to do it.

I checked and the 9 inch route is 345.00 for just the housing and 715.00 with axles the third member I know of is 150.00 plus 50 shipping we are at 915.00, that is getting up there my logical choice is the current 10 bolt for this phase of the project with posi and gears, I will let the pole decide but we dont want to kill the budget. 15,000.00 goes quick and we have spent about 6500.00 so far.

I based my choice on the fact that you originally stated the 9" would cost 800.00, the 12 bolt 1,000.00 + and you didn't include a price for the 10 bolt.

Is the 10 bolt in decent shape? It will obviously need c-clip eliminators, posi and gears as well.

I guess what I'm saying is that you'd get better poll results if the cost of each were identified more clearly.. After all, this is a low buck build.

Good point im working on the actual 10 bolt costs now I really did not figure we would have so much on the ford side, but as of now it is looking like the 9 inch is going to be the best bet in the long run we are going to be in the 10 bolt I found a clean clutch type posi for 225.00 gears 157.00 with shipping seals c-clip eliminators and bearing kit 248.00 630.00 on the ten bolt we would only save a few hundread, lets see where the polls go and thats what we will do.

The 10 bolt seems like an easy route. It will hold up to that hp/torque without any breakage if you go with the 'C' clip eliminators and a good set of gears. The 28 spline axles would be your weak point, but will still be plenty for that hp/torque. I vote for re-using or freshening up what you already have. Remember there will be a hidden cost for parts and fabricating the new 12 bolt or 9" with perches etc. to fit under the car.

I voted for the 10 bolt. If it's an O 10 bolt it is plenty strong but the internals are more costly than a chevy 10 bolt. The 10 bolt with the right axles will be strong enough. After the car is built and you run it for awhile you could always sell the 10 bolt and stab the ford in it, seems like that is where the poll is going. Also, the pull a part is your friend on alot of these poll questions. I don't see any price quotes from there. Around here, you can get a good 12 bolt or 9 bolt for under $100 and pay a shop to freshen it up for way less than the prices you have posted.

Thanks for the input, The car is a 72 so it is a corprate 8.5 10 bolt they are all the same no "O" type here. The third member on the ford 3:55 31 spline posi at 150.00 is a steal, I actually already purchased it for my junk pile if it is used for the car then we will apply the price the 9 inch housing is new and already has all the correct mounts installed and width for the application and is the best price out there, To actualluy buy a ford 9in for a hundread bucks from a junk yard and make it fit a 72 cutlass would cost way more in the long run with the posi and gears needed for the application and cutting the housing and new housing ends for the aplication. The 12 bolt if it were the correct gear ratio was a steal.. but is just a bit low for what we are trying to do.
