Dallas events are not that far away. Austin has the new COTA track, I know they have some events there, but I moved from Austin 8 years ago and don't keep up much with the local scene any more. Texas World Speedway is in College Station which is 1-1/2 hours from Waco. There is also the annual BBORR (Big Bend Open Road Race), that is a bit farther.
My parents live in Whitney which is a short drive north of Waco. Probably 2 hours at the most from my house which is north of Dallas to Waco. I have driven most of the back roads between San Antonio and Dallas. The drive from Whitney to Waco on 933 is quite nice. Speed limits on these little back roads are often 70 and the pavement is pretty smooth, lots of sweeping curves and gentle elevation changes. There are a lot of nice highways in Texas to take road trips. I-35 is not one of them... too busy. When driving from Austin to Dallas I usually turn off I-35 in Waco and head across State Hwy 31 to Corsicana, then take I-45 North into Dallas. It is not unusual for me to see less than a dozen cars on the trip between Waco and Corsicana once I turn off US 84 and leave Waco behind.
One of my favorite road trips is to head out of Dallas through Cleburne on 67 through Glen Rose and pick up 281 South to San Antonio. Most of the trip is through the "Hill Country" area. There are a few cruises in the nicer months. Here is info on some of the areas you can visit:
