Onsite: This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis.
We are seeking a Racing Project and Track Support Engineer to lead and support propulsion system activities within GM's exciting Corvette Racing program! You will be responsible for developing propulsion integration solutions to meet race car performance requirements. Your creativity, initiative, and high level of independent judgment are key to your success. In addition to GM on-site development activities, this role requires extensive domestic and international travel to support testing and race event weekends.
Our team of engineers develop and implement propulsion performance solutions to assist our partner teams in their success on the track through cross functional collaboration.
Joining the Sports Car Propulsion Team will provide you with the experience and exposure it takes to contribute to the success of our race programs and the opportunity to showcase your engine development and calibration skills, promote innovation, connect lessons learned in racing to production intent vehicles, and ultimately, help shape the future of Motorsports.
What you will do:
In the Lab:
Specification, setup, issue resolution, data analysis, and results reporting for dyno development tests to optimize power, fuel economy, drivability, parasitic losses, weight reduction, durability, shift performance, and control strategies
Calibration and software development for engine and driveline controls
Parts tracking and delivery coordination
Assist in engine and driveline inspection, assembly, installation and operation during dyno development and validation testing
Trackside:
Establish and monitor vehicle engine and driveline controls
Perform system checks and troubleshoot communications and CAN issues
Set up and inspect pit and vehicle telemetry to confirm race event readiness
Review logged vehicle data to monitor and communicate issues and potential performance enhancements to appropriate race team members, including fuel usage/strategy and calibration of these improvements
Participate in debriefing sessions with other propulsion and race team members to confirm issues or propose advancements, and prioritize follow-up activities
Direct and advise on tasks needing to be performed on engine and instrumentation
Collaborate with vehicle engineers providing calibration of control systems such as pit-speed limiters, traction control, and shifting upgrades
Compile and present engine data to team managers for presentation to sanctioning bodies when requested
Create daily report summarizing data, results, issues, and concerns for each race car
Extensive domestic and/or international travel is required to support development activities and race event weekends
Additional Job Description:
What you will need:
Bachelor of Engineering degree or significant engine development and calibration experience
Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of engine mechanical, electrical, and control systems
5+ years working cohesively with engineers, designers, technicians, or other partners in a high performing team environment
Proven track record in the continuous evolution of propulsion performance in the presence of tight regulatory and time constraints
Experience making informed decisions under high pressure and with limited time
Powertrain calibration and controls knowledge: PID tuning; Torque-based controls strategy; Gearbox shifting calibration
Reading and interpretation of Simulink models
High level knowledge of OEM and motorsports EMS (Engine Management Systems), telemetry, propulsion and driveline control systems, hardware, and software (e.g. GM, Bosch, Motec, TAG McLaren, Mega Line)
Outstanding teamwork skills to effectively collaborate and communicate with varying levels of internal and external key partners
Nice to have:
Prior experience performing propulsion development and track-side support for a race team
Race or advanced engine assembly
Experience using high level dyno systems, hardware, and software (e.g., AVL PUMA Open, IndiCom, Concerto and ETAS INCA systems)
Engine combustion analysis using in cylinder pressure measurement systems
Knowledge of hybrid propulsion hardware, software, and control strategies
High level knowledge of industrial and mil spec wiring systems & hardware (e.g. Deutsch and Amphenol)
