Default Help! Ls1 swap in 67 Camaro, Headers to clear steering

Hello everybody, I'm new to the forum, and have a ? if anybody can help!
I'm doing a LS1/ T56 swap in my 67 RS Camaro. I'm using ATS motor mounts, stock subframe and a rack and pinion steering mounted behind the crossmember. I'm thinking of using Hooker or S&P headers
Anybody have experience with a header that has clearance for the rack on the driver's side?
I dont want to hammer a new set of headers to make them fit

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Shawn

I read on the Ls1-tech that running factory 302 mounts might help-they are different than regular small block ones- don't know if hw was running rack steering- good luck-Chris

All I can tell you is this.... I have the ATS mounts using regular small block frame mounts and the stock steering box. Stainless Works headers hit the steering box severely and would have necessitated the 3rd header tube be cut off and custom made to clear. Hooker LS1 headers fit and only slightly touch the steering box and the piman arm pivot but do not interfere with operation of the vehicle and steering. If your rack and pinion setup fits within the confines of where the center link, tie rods, etc. fit with a stock setup you should be fine with either since the steering box is the big obstacle.

Jeff,
are you talking about the hooker ls1 block hugger headers?

Shawn, we put one an Ls1 in a 69 Camaro here in class, we purchased S&P headers, they fit fine, no fitment issues, but the quailty could be better. Our steering is bone stock.

It would seem you have more choices in headers with a rack and pinion set up.

Which set did you order? SW has headers to clear a steering box and headers for rack installations for the LSx in first gens.

Here's a thread where a guy is running Hooker headers and Autokraft engine plates which he says are the same as ATS.

http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=639679

Looks like he had to dimple the headers pretty bad to get them to fit. You might want to consider SW
