Got an iPhone4....convince me I need an iPad
So I've had an iPhone 4 since they came out...love it and use alot of its features.
Thinking of getting an iPad2 for Xmas for my wife.....but to me it seems like the iPad is just a big version of my phone (except the phone call part).....does all the same stuff, just a bigger screen...
So...convince me I need to spend another $500 on a big version of my phone...

Ned I've had the exact same thoughts... I have had the Iphone4 as well... many of my friends have the Ipad... so what I did is get the Ipad2 (on craigslist BTW to save $100.. LOL) and am giving it to my parents for Xmas... if they don't like it or want, they can give it to me.

Having a ITouch for a while, I am very un-impressed with CPU, software defects (the apps crash -- even ones on the device from the factory), security, and web connectivity.
From what I have see and heard about the IPad, it suffers from similar issues.
My wife asked for a tablet this Christmas and we looked at the IPad, Kindle Fire, and Nook.
The Nook was un-impressive as it only allows you 1GB space for non-B&N content.
The Fire is interesting, but we are in Europe often and it seems the Fire is zone locked. Also, see: http://video.msn.com?vid=d1a91e3b-8d...ermalink:uuids.
What I have been watching out for is the new nvidia tegra 3 CPU in a tablet (see: http://www.tegra3.org). It's the first quad core CPU for a tablet.
Just today Amazon started selling the ASUS TF201 ( http://www.amazon.com/TF201-B1-GR-Tr...524162&sr=1-4). It's about the same price you are looking at, can be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich (the latest Android OS), has very good graphics and gives us space for videos, music, etc.
Here is the difference between dual cores and quad cores:

Win8 on tablet:

So, you can guess what the wife is going to get for Christmas.

I love my ipad2. No software issues or problems at all. Truly wireless ( no power cords...very lightweight...long battery life). I don't use it to type very much...Just to read and respond to forums..read news articles..etc. It does have some limitations such as no " flash"... Detachable HD is tough....it's not for someone who wants to use it for Microsoft word or any other office product. All in all...I love it and have to say I am getting interested in more and more Apple products. I have an Apple iPod touch and enjoy that too. Good luck!
No iPhone yet...too cheap to justify the extra money each month. My work has "wifi" so I use my touch there...an iPhone is in my future...just not now.

We have a whole house full of iPads and iPad2's... everybody loves them. Gwen uses her's for reading and never puts it down... mine sits here and I play solitaire on it... and usually take it on trips over the laptop... They're fast - reliable and do everything well EXCEPT -- typing... they are hard to type on.
Now - the best part of the iPhone 4 S ---- SIRI! Pick up the phone - ask it "how much is 4point2 percent of 650,000? Stupid thing gives you the answer!
Just ask it - how far is it from my current position to Ned Jacksons - it pulls up google maps and gives you the info.
I swore at mine the other day -- it responded "now now"

IMO, No one really "needs" an ipad.... no more than you need an iphone. But you will find more and more ways to use it everyday.
We have 7 people with ipad's in my shop.. none of us have crash issues.

We have 3 in our house. My 2 year old and 5 year old are amazing on the ipads (games, movies, pictures, youtube, etc). We load them up with movies for our flights to hawaii. Need? Maybe a little strong, but they are awesome. We bring our old iPhones along when we go out to eat in case the girls need a little entertainment if they get bored with the crayons.

I am an Android guy myself. Several Family Members have iPads and iPad 2's. They love them. Personally I had an iPad for about 4 months and sold it to get the Asus TF101 when it came out. I've never looked back. I like the fact that I can simply pop in a memory card full of movies, pictures etc without having to deal with iTunes and syncing etc.. Yeah I know there is Drop Box and now iCloud, but for me there is just something about being able to swap some memory in and out as desired. I keep a card with movies on it to pop in when traveling - - I can easily throw .mkv files from my Media Center PC that I've recorded onto and it will play anything I can throw at it...OK - off my soap box.
If you like Apple stuff, which you obviously do since you have an iPhone. I think you will like an iPad. If you are open to other products, check out some of the Android Tablets.
I use my Tablet 85% of the time at home and only jump on the PC or Laptop for specific tasks.

Ok....so I bought one Just got the basic 16 GB one in black.
I've got a couple of DVD's that come with digital copies......is it possible to take my other existing DVD's (no digital copy included) and load them on there? Never done that type of stuff since I had no desire to watch a movie on some tiny screen on my iPhone etc.....

There may be other solutions out there, but from my experience when I had my iPad I did the following (which was a PTA, BTW). There are ways to rip the DVD - I won't go into all of that, but you will need to rip the DVD and then convert it to a format that the iPad likes. I think I used a program called "Handbrake". You then have to load the file onto the iPad through iTunes. This process was one of the frustrations I had with the iPad. It can be done, but most people just opt for the easy solution of just buying it again through iTunes, which I'm sure was part of the plan.......
I loaded 4 or 5 movies onto my iPad before a long trip and it took me all night the night before (literally, 4hrs) to get it done - and I already had the movies ripped. Now I just grab them and drag them onto my Android Tablet or toss them onto a card and away I go - -no converting files etc..
If you Google how to take a DVD and put it onto an iPad I'm sure there are a million different ways to do it.
Maybe someone with more iPad experience will chime in with a better solution. I don't mean to be a downer, but the experience of putting movies on my iPad was not easy.....
Good Luck!
