Weren't the SD blocks and motors made in conjunction with an outside source(Herb Adams I think), I can't remember the guys name. But wasn't the blocks set up for cam driven dry sump oiling and 4 bolt mains, Big rods, steel cranks and those wicked heads and intake? Rumor was they even painted them a different color of blue (Year One has a color called Super Duty Blue) so the emissions boys could tell the difference when testing. They were just "detuned" or smogged down from what I recall.
