Heat Treating Axle shafts

can anyone tell me anything about having my axles heat treated?

I have a moser rear end that i need the axles shortened and the only place nearby wont do them unless i know exactly what metal it is and how hard i want them??
as they are already hardended do they need re heating after shortening?

any ideas on the subject ?
