So is it falling on it's face when you stomp the pedal? Or as you "ease" into it?

You're right - if you already bumped the squirter up - then you could be masking a lean primary... usually I'd bump the squirter and or power valve if it "hesitated" as I jumped on it... because it's just there to help the "transition" as you open the blades up quickly (adding fuel to "richen" with no vacuum).

Typically - you divide the vacuum reading in half - gives you a good power valve size.

Lean - usually feels like you're running out of gas or a "flat feeling" to the pedal... and or a lean "miss". Funny how many people chase the ignition system when they're really feeling a lean miss...

I HATE carburetors... :>)

BTW - Todd - my explanation wasn't really for YOU ... but maybe others that are reading the thread and working out their own carb issues... Not that I know what I'm talking about! I'm an EFI guy!

The highs and lows of building hot rods. I had a severe hesitation say 1/8to 1/2 throttle. I changed squirters, power valve, adjusted floats and finally bumped the primary jets up 4 and it ran great. So I bring it home and the idle starts getting erratic. Put the vaccum gauge on it to adjust the idle mixture screws to no avail. Thought mayble the new power vavle was opening at idle. I finally figure out that the primary venturis are dripping fuel usually meaning the floats are to high but I set them dead nuts. I pulled the site hole plug and theh primary was to high. Strange, so I reset it and it's doing it again. I watch the fuel in the bowl running and it's to low now. I finally figure out the needle is not moving freely in it's bore. (Possibly debris)So I finally get it running great and the needle craps out. To say I was pissed was a major understatement Anyway, I grabbed a new needle/seat, float, and gaskets just to be safe and bumped the jet up .001. I'd give it a 9.5/10 now. This car has never run this good. Changes I made to make it happen:

PV: 4.5 to 7.5 to 4.5 to 7.5 (Higher vaccum on this engine)
Primary Jets: 71 to 77 to 78
Front squirter: 32 to 37 to 40 back to 37
Rear Squirter: 37 to 40
Replaced needle/seat/float/gaskets

So another hands on Holley tuning experience. My garage smells like a gas tanker and one of my neighbors came over to complain about the noise. I've been working on this thing so long and much she thought I was running a shop!
