As much as it would be nice to save the $120 I've got to spend for two new seat mounting plates on my project, I'm not sure I'd want to do without them for a few reasons:
1. They're pretty heavy, and likely impart quite a bit of structural support to the floorpan. If I was to take them out, I'd want to beef up the floor with something else.
2. They sit right over the rear mounting points for the subframe, so they stiffen the floor at the subframe mounting points as well, which is a good thing.
3. As thick as they are, they provide a solid mount for the seats. I'd hate to think what would happen in a crash if you only had the seats bolted through the floorpan, or through the pan and a thin piece of sheetmetal reinforcing.
