Looks like the one way valve came out. I recall there should also be a spring, but it's not used on every pump model. When pump is shoted down, the pressurated fuel presses the plunger against the pump frame closing way the pressure going true the pump back to tank.
You can run with out it but it maid be little harder(longer) to start up cos you dont have already pressurased fuel in fuelrails. Or you can run pre-pressurising relay/ or if running aftermarket injection, you can chance setting from ecu to run your fuel pump.
Most european/japanish cars have that kind of relay, when you turn ignition on, you can heard your fuelpump running acouple seconds.
THAT would depend on what you're running. A simple LS3 or a turbo'd 1000hp big block...
If the pump you're showing is adequate --- then probably the WALBRO 255 which is rated to 500hp... for EFI which I'm assuming you're running, NOT a carb.

Lol sorry, Iam running an LQ4 with LS6 top end and a little more compression (factory injection setup). Probably no more than 350-400 horse, although a supercharger is in its future.

Walbro 255. Do a search on Ls1 tech. I have no experience with the 340 but I have used the walbro in about 6 different builds and never replaced one. Plus they are 100 bucks.
