Airbags contain sodium azide and it takes electricity to ignite it to deploy them. I've exploded many of them with a 9V or cordless impact battery.

If the connectors are unplugged there is a provision in them that shorts the two terminals together so an errant electrical charge won't set them off. If you leave them in you can just short the two wires together with a crimp connector for added protection, but I would just take them out.
